At this point I have decided that I want to take a look at the expression of identity through fashion and clothing. I think I want to take a look at clothes that iconically belong to a certain group and the stereotypes that exist as a result. I am also interested in doing a comparison between Berlin and Seattle or the United States and Germany. For example, what is a clothing item or brand in Berlin that is a sign of financial stability and wellbeing? Within the United States there are many; are they similar between the two places? Is this valued more in one country or the other, etc.? I think most of my research will be done through interviewing. I am hoping the people that know German clothing stereotypes the best are Germans themselves.
I also suspect a lot of my research will come from German and Berlin fashion blogs and magazines to keep up with current trends while I am there.
Here are a few resources I found to begin my work before traveling to Germany.
